Understanding activation lock
Activation lock is an Apple security feature that prevents unauthorized use of iOS devices and Macs if they are lost or stolen. It is automatically activated when the"Locate" function is enabled on the device.
→ More information on this function in the Apple documentation.
Understanding the bypass code
The bypass code is a unique code that unlocks the device after reset without using the original Apple ID or password. This code is usually supplied by the owner or administrator of the device.
When a device is supervised via an MDM like Primo, it's possible to record this bypass code and reset your devices with peace of mind.
Use bypass code
If the bypass code is stored in Primo, you can find it in your Devices tab > Devices > on the device concerned.
You can then use it according to the different macOS versions:
For macOS Catalina (10.15) and later versions
- Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.
- On the activation lock screen, click on the question mark icon next to the Apple ID field.
- Select "Bypass activation lock".
- Enter the activation lock bypass code provided.
- Click "Unlock" to remove the activation lock.
For macOS Mojave (10.14) and earlier versions :
- Connect your Mac to the Internet.
- On the activation lock screen, enter the bypass code directly in the password field.
- Click "Unlock" to remove the activation lock.
Important notes
- The bypass code is generally a single-use code for each device.
- It is case-sensitive. Enter it exactly as supplied.
- For company-owned devices, make sure you have authorization from your IT department.
Troubleshooting
If the bypass code does not work :
- Check that the code is entered correctly.
- Check the Internet connection.
- Restart the device and try again.
- Contact your device administrator or Apple Support if problems persist.
Legal and ethical considerations
Only use the activation lock bypass code on devices you own or for which you have explicit authorization to unlock. Unauthorized use may be illegal.
