How to Unlock Your MacBook If You Forgot Your Password
There are several ways to unlock your MacBook when you can no longer log in. Here are the different methods depending on your situation:
With MDM and Recovery Key
If your MacBook is enrolled and encrypted with Primo and you have a recovery key in the cockpit, here are the steps to follow:
- Enter an incorrect password three times to bring up the recovery options
- If this does not work, reboot into recovery mode by holding the keys Command + R pressed at startup
- Select "I forgot my passwords"
- Reset password using your recovery key
- Restart your machine
MacBook not enrolled but with an Apple account
If the MacBook is not enrolled in Primo and you do not have a recovery key, the only possible option to reset the password is if the MacBook is linked to an Apple account:
- Method 1:
- Enter an incorrect password three times
- Choose "Reset it using your Apple ID"
- Sign in to your Apple account to set a new password
- Method 2:
- Reboot in recovery mode (keys Command + R)
- Select "I forgot my passwords"
- Reset your password using your Apple ID
Extreme case: MacBook not enrolled and without Apple account
If your MacBook is not enrolled in Primo, and you do not have a recovery key or access to an associated Apple account,The only option will be to completely reset your MacBook in recovery mode.. Please note, this method will erase all your data.
